One of the worst possible trends we're seeing in the world is the tendency towards reductionism. Health care laws being reduced to Supreme Court Justices feeling they can now legislate with impunity. Psychologists reducing broader terms like anxiety into pathological mini-bites, all with their own set of stigmas.
Reductionism is an unskilled attempt to pare away complexity, brand it, and sell it. People overwhelmed by complexity breath a sigh of relief when this happens, because it allows them to substitute believing in something and getting emotionally excited about it for actually thinking it through, arguing constructively with others to deepen comprehension, and putting the various arguments into a broader context. The latter approach takes us to the depths, the former keeps us on the superficial surface.
That surface is the soil in which ideologies to take root: be they political, economic, religious or otherwise.
